The biggest threat to your success isn’t failure.

It’s momentum.

You’re good at what you do.

You’ve built habits, systems, routines.

You don’t notice when they stop serving you.

That’s how you fall behind.

You don’t need to fix something that’s broken.

You need to question something that’s working.

When was the last time you reimagined how you lead?

Most managers chase improvement.

They upgrade tools.

They train teams.

They optimise process.

But they never stop to ask: “Is this the right thing to be doing at all?”

That’s not improvement. That’s leadership.

Leadership asks questions others don’t.

A few signs it’s time to reimagine your work:

  • You keep solving the same problems.
  • Your meetings sound the same.
  • Your team relies on you more, not less.
  • You’re busy but not making progress.
  • Your instincts say “something’s off”, but you ignore it.
  • These are signals. Don’t dismiss them.

Here’s what reimagining looks like in practice:

1. Scrap one routine. Not tweak. Not improve. Remove. Pick a recurring process and stop doing it for a week. Review the results. No harm? Don’t bring it back. Problem? Design it better.

Action: Choose one weekly meeting. Cancel it. Talk to the team. What happened?

2. Reassign one decision. You hold too many decisions. Even the simple ones. Push one down. Let a team member handle it from now on. Give them parameters. Stay out of it. Watch how fast they grow.

Action: Pick one low-risk approval you still control. Delegate it permanently.

3. Ask your team what’s not working. Then do something about it. Most feedback loops are broken. Managers ask. Teams answer. Nothing changes. Fix that cycle.

Action: Ask your team this week, “What’s the one thing we should stop doing?” Then, stop doing it.

4. Reframe your own value. You’re not paid to do. You’re paid to make the right things happen. Through others. That changes what you focus on. Are you working in the business or on the business?

Action: Track your time this week. How much is spent leading vs doing?

5. Make yourself redundant. It’s not weakness. It’s strength. If you left tomorrow, would your team still perform? Could they think, act, and improve without you? That’s your real legacy.

Action: Build a checklist or SOP for one task you always handle. Teach it. Step away.

We worked with a senior project lead last year. He had been in post for 15 years. Nothing was broken. Nothing was growing either. He scrapped three standing meetings. He delegated two team decisions. He documented five core processes.

His team got faster. His inbox halved. He created capacity for innovation. And that led to a £2.1M contract. No shiny tech. No restructure. Just different thinking.

The habits that helped you grow might be blocking you now. You don’t need a better version of your day. You need a different one.

So ask yourself: What’s one thing that still works… but shouldn’t?
