You’ve heard it before. “Follow your passion.”
But what if that’s the wrong advice?
Successful people say they love what they do. The assumption is that passion led them there.
But what if success created the passion?
Winning feels good.
Recognition builds motivation.
Progress fuels interest.
So which comes first?
Passion is Unreliable
- Passions are hard to prioritise. You may love multiple things: sports, music, coding, writing. Which do you choose?
- Passions change. What excites you at 21 may not at 40. Careers evolve. Interests fade.
- Passion doesn’t guarantee skill. Just because you love something doesn’t mean you’re good at it.
Britain’s Got Talent proves this every year. Passionate contestants pour their hearts out, most fall flat.
Skill Matters More
- Skills are measurable. You know when you’re improving.
- Skills create value. People pay for ability, not enthusiasm.
- Skills lead to opportunities. Growth comes from competence, not excitement.
Find what you’re good at. Then develop it. Mastery brings confidence. Confidence fuels motivation. Motivation becomes passion.
Focus on Impact
Passion is about you, what you love, what excites you.
Skill is about others, what they need, what you contribute.
The most fulfilled people focus outward. They solve problems. They add value.
Stop chasing passion. Start building expertise. Success follows.
