Three accountants decided they needed a break. The annual audits were over, tax season was behind them, and for once, they had a free weekend.
So, they booked a fishing trip. A day out on the water, away from spreadsheets and balance sheets. They rented a small boat, packed some food and drink and headed off into the middle of the loch.
The first accountant, John, was the adventurous one. “Right,” he said, “I’ll catch the first fish. Just watch.” He cast his line expertly, reeled it in a few times, and within minutes, he had a fish flopping in the bucket. The other two applauded.
The second accountant, Susan, was the analytical one. She’d been watching John closely. “Let me calculate the optimum casting angle,” she said, pulling out her phone. After a moment of furious tapping, she nodded and cast her line. Sure enough, she caught a fish almost instantly. “It’s all about the data,” she said smugly.
The third accountant, Dave, was the cautious one. He hadn’t even touched his rod. He just sat in the boat, staring into the water.
“What are you doing, Dave?” asked John.
“I’m waiting,” Dave replied.
“Waiting for what?” Susan asked, irritated. “There’s no strategy in waiting.”
Dave looked at them both seriously. “I’m reconciling the bucket first. I need to ensure we’re accurately reporting our fish count before I proceed.”
The others groaned. “Dave, just fish already!” Susan snapped.
Dave sighed and finally picked up his rod. He cast his line and immediately hooked something big. Really big. The rod bent almost in half as he struggled to reel it in.
“Help me out!” Dave shouted. John grabbed the rod, Susan grabbed the net, and together they wrestled the monster to the surface. It was enormous. Easily the biggest fish of the day.
But just as they were about to pull it into the boat, the ferox trout broke free and splashed back into the loch. Silence fell.
John shook his head. “Unbelievable. You had it!”
Susan sighed. “Typical. You accountants are so focused on balancing everything, you don’t know when to hold on.”
Dave, drenched and defeated, just muttered, “At least I kept the records accurate. Zero fish lost, zero fish gained.”
