At this time of year, we tend to make all kinds of resolutions, we want to lose weight, exercise more, spend more time with family and friends plus a million other things. But once we get back to work it all seems to get forgotten about. We slip back into the same old routine.

Why do you think that is?

I can’t speak for everyone but for me it used to be because I went about it in the wrong way. I didn’t visualise what I wanted to achieve first. I never visualised what the outcome would be and how it would feel. Now at this point you might be thinking that I’ve lost my mind and its all getting a bit too whoo, whoo! Please, stay with me. 😊

Resolutions

To me a resolution is different to a goal in the way that a resolution never really seemed real, it felt like something I’d made up because I thought I should, after all its New Year’s Eve this is the perfect time to make them, but I stopped a long time ago because they weren’t working, I never stuck to them. Now I set goals.

Goals

I don’t just wait until today to set goals, I set them throughout the year as it helps keep me on track. But what type of goals should you set? Well that all depends on you and what you want out of life. It could be to start a new business, grow and existing business, get that extension to the house you’ve been promising or maybe the new Range Rover 22. Its really a personal choice that you, and you alone, have to make. I want you to be really selfish here, these goals are for you, not your partner, kids or business partners, they can make their own or you can make goals together later. I’m talking about your goals.

Some say that you shouldn’t set your goals too high as this leads to disappointment, bull3hit. Let’s say your goal is to make or turnover an extra £1 million during 2022. What happens if you only manage an extra £800,000.00, you might think that you’ve failed, but have you? You have an extra £800,000.00 you wouldn’t have had if you hadn’t set the goal. Make your goals as big and as ugly as you like, there your goals.

Visualisation

A goal to me is nothing without visualisation, you’re only halfway there and it’s at this point it could all go wrong. When you set a goal, you have to visualise what it will look like and what it will feel like once you reach it. For some this can be the tricky part, in my experience it’s the part that people find the most difficult to stick with because not everyone is good at creating a picture in their head and then imagining what it feels like to achieve their goal. But this is where the magic happens.

Let’s stick with our 1 million. Now try to create an image in your head that it’s New Year’s Eve 2022 and you’ve reached your goal, in fact you’ve smashed it. What would that feel like, what would it look like, how different would your business and your life be today if that happened?

Visualising your goals will really help you achieve them, trust I’m a doctor. 😉

All of the above is my personal take on goal setting and visualisation and what works for me, so its meant only to get your thinking.
